70s Style

from the cycle «Modern Styles»

Many people have been discussing the resurgence of the bold and distinctive style of the 70s. However, this style is not always clearly defined. The artistic style of the 70s was complex in structure and not always straightforward, serving as a vivid reflection of its era. Therefore, the primary focus of this lecture will be the creative approach that brought together various elements in that period.

In the 1970s, the world experienced significant changes, and the constraints of modernism no longer satisfied society's tastes and needs. The combination of technological progress and postmodern art gave rise to entirely new forms of furniture and lighting. The aesthetics of the time began to view interiors not merely as functional spaces but as stages for human life, filled with decorative elements that didn't always serve a functional purpose.

During the lecture, we will delve into the structure and background of the interior style of the 70s and 80s, highlighting its main distinctions from the mid-century style, from which it drew inspiration. We will explore the use of cast plastic and polyurethane molding, which led to sculptural furniture, as well as the wallpaper and fabrics in the pop art style. We'll discuss radical design and the profound irony that permeated the interiors of that era.

We will examine iconic works from that period that have become timeless classics and are still in production today. We will also explore the masterpieces of art design that now grace the world's finest museums, along with the influential designers who were ahead of their time and continue to shape global design even today.

Finally, we will touch on contemporary reinterpretations of this style, its ongoing relevance, and the factors contributing to its enduring appeal.
