Bauhaus Women

from the cycle «Great Women in Design»

This lecture is part of the “Great Women in Design” cycle, which profiles the lives and contributions of influential female designers, including Eileen Gray, Charlotte Perriand, Zaha Hadid, Paola Navone, and Patricia Urquiola.

In 2019, the world celebrated the centenary of the founding of the Bauhaus school, an institution and cultural phenomenon that laid the foundations of modern design. The Bauhaus is commonly associated with the names of renowned male designers and architects like Walter Gropius, Mies van Der Rohe, Marcel Breuer, and Wilhelm Wagenfeld, who were unconventional, active, and undeniably significant. However, the Bauhaus legacy was shaped not only by these male figures but also by brilliant women whose names often remain unfamiliar to the general public. This lecture shines a light on these remarkable women.

We will delve into the work of Marianne Brandt, Lilly Reich, Gertrud Arndt, Gynta Stolz, and other remarkable women who played pivotal roles in the history of design but have remained in the shadow of their male counterparts.
