Interior Design: Professional Standards

from the cycle «Design Practice»

The profession of «Interior Designer» in Russia is relatively young. While André Putman was creating luxurious interiors in Paris, private design projects in the USSR were unthinkable. The profession began taking shape in the 2000s of the 21st century after going through its formative stages in the 1990s. However, even today, despite the presence of many excellent designers in Russia, it cannot be said that the profession has fully matured. A mature profession operates based on established standards, enabling designers to communicate effectively and share a common understanding of their work.

These standards do not limit a designer but are informed by the accumulated experience of Western colleagues. They are designed to streamline the design process, enhance individual professionalism, and, most importantly, foster a cohesive community of designers. This community plays a crucial role in shaping how the profession is perceived by clients.

During the lecture, we will cover:

  • The primary services that a designer or design studio should offer.
  • The essential skills and competencies that every designer should possess.
  • The stages involved in working on a design project.
  • Tools for effective client interaction and strategies for understanding and presenting design concepts.
  • The distinction between a project brief and a technical assignment.
  • And much more.
