Golden Age of Finnish Design

from the cycle «History and Theory of Design»

This lecture is dedicated to the legendary Finnish designers who brought fame to their country and significantly shaped the development of global modernism. Finnish design is characterized by its ingenious fusion of international and national design elements. For the first time, by focusing on the psychophysical perception of individuals, the Finns were able to craft a comprehensive objective environment for modern humans, positioning themselves at the forefront of Scandinavian design.

All of this paved the way for the creation of numerous unique pieces of furniture, household items, and lighting that not only served their functions but also evoked the sense of warmth and comfort essential in the northern regions. Design, in essence, became a national concept and a symbol of Finnish cultural identity.

During the lecture, we will delve into the distinctiveness of Finnish design, its evolution, and its roots. We will also explore the contributions of renowned design and architecture masters such as:

  • Eliel Saarinen
  • Alvar Aalto
  • Reima Pietila
  • Matti Suuronen
  • Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen
  • Eero Arnio
  • Yrjo Kukkapuro
